For Michael Wall’s new series of derivative sculptures and paintings, the artist references the subject from a 2008 YouTube video to explore the tools of mythmaking in the digital age. GNOMEs GNOMEs GNOMEs is a reflection on the acts and terms that originate from online spaces — it embraces the convergence of ancient folktales and modern storytelling via a faceless fluid form and an amalgamation of simplified aesthetics.
In the end, the work queries the importance of the physical realm: is it really more “real” than the immaterial? You be the judge.
